Are DIY Replacement Teeth Safe?
June 30, 2023
Few people have extra money lying around for expensive dental procedures, like replacing lost teeth. If you’re looking for ways to save money, don’t turn to risky DIY tooth replacement. You will find many over-the-counter products and at-home solutions for a variety of dental problems, but pinching pennies can cause irreversible damage. Here’s why it’s best to spend the extra money on safe, proven results when treating tooth loss.
The Risks of DIY Tooth Replacement
Many over-the-counter molds, gels, waxes, and other dental products can provide a quick fix for various issues. Not to mention, you can purchase a variety of dental products online, including replacement teeth.
Unfortunately, many are harmful to your oral and general health. Some can contain toxic chemicals or cause allergic reactions. Others can damage your teeth and gums. Instead of a convenient solution, you will have a big problem down the road that can be expensive to resolve.
Options to Replace Lost Teeth
You have more options than ever to treat tooth loss, which means there’s a solution to fit your budget. After examining your mouth and learning more about your concerns, your dentist will recommend a prosthetic, like:
- Dental Bridge: The portions of your lost teeth visible above the gum line are recreated from an all-ceramic material. It is held in place by bonding dental crowns to the adjacent teeth. It can be used to replace one or more consecutive lost teeth.
- Partial Denture: Prosthetic teeth are set in a gum-colored base to fill the gaps of those you’ve lost. It has a metal framework to clip or clasp onto your remaining teeth to stay in place.
- Full Denture: Prosthetic teeth are affixed to a gum-colored base that’s created using an impression of your mouth. It will rest on top of your gum tissue and use suction to stay in place when replacing an entire arch of teeth.
- Dental Implants: A dental implant is the only method to recreate both the root and the crown. A titanium post is inserted into the jaw to act as a new root and support a custom-made restoration that’s attached to using an abutment. Dental implants can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or an entire arch. If you’re missing several teeth, each tooth is not replaced individually. Instead, a specific number of dental implants are used to support a bridge or denture.
Everyone enjoys saving money, but dental care is not an area you should focus on the cost. DIY solutions can save you money around the home, but there’s no substitute for a qualified dentist. They’ll help you achieve your best smile while staying within your budget.
